Artist statement 2014 (Painting II class)

I seek to represent a diverse range of spaces, indoor and outdoor, man-made and natural. I am drawn to the emotional impact of place, especially those places reflecting an air of beauty or sublimity. I would describe my style as softened realism, and I look to create a scene e that matches the impression I draw from a place by means of color and atmosphere. Although my paintings always pull toward softness, my process has come to a point of transition for this series, as some of my works are thickly-layered and more textured, while others are thin and ethereal. My artwork is mostly comprised of oil paintings with some acrylics.
To me, painting is a visual pleasure. I do not often use painting to confront society or express my personal struggles or opinions, as I have seen a huge fraction of artists dedicate their work to. I used to be worried by my work’s lack of a conceptual center, but having the freedom to design my own series without much external pressure has shifted my thoughts. I am comfortable in keeping my work free of much conceptual influence, at least for this stage of my work. I have considered the past few years a period of artistic development, more so in the way of honing a personal style and picking up knowledge and skills in painting than in finding a conceptual center to base my work upon. As of now, I only seek to explore emotion and imagination from the scenes I depict, drawing on my personal thoughts in choosing subject matter and using my developing style (a focused or diverse color palette, a softened or highly rendered treatment of detail, ect.) to express them.
At a basic level, I simply hope my work pleases people. I wish to invite those observing my work to view it carefully and examine their own emotional response to it. It is my hope that the enjoyment I gain from building scenes of beauty or sublimity can evoke a response, awaken a memory, or provide a small escape for viewers.
